Chafetz featured in Lazarus series

Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra principal timpanist and frequent guest conductor Stuart Chafetz will be the featured speaker for the Hebrew Congregation’s Shirley Lazarus Sunday Speakers Series at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Hurlbut Church sanctuary.

Chafetz has served as principal timpanist of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra since 1997. This year, he guest conducted the annual Independence Day concert, which he has done for the past nine years, as well as the Opera Pops concert in August.

Kotzin presents on Buffalo Jewish community for Hebrew Congregation

The Hebrew Congregation is pleased to feature archivist and historian Chana Kotzin, who will speak on “Community Memories from Jewish Buffalo” at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Hurlbut Church sanctuary for the Shirley Lazarus Sunday Speaker Series.

Kotzin serves as the coordinator for the Jewish Buffalo Archives Project, which seeks to create a comprehensive collection of Jewish institutional, organizational and family materials in the greater Buffalo and Niagara areas. She has recorded oral histories to complement the documentary material and works with individuals, Jewish groups, camps and the State University of New York University at Buffalo, which is partnering with the project.

Doctors Without Borders’ Mitchell presents for Lazarus Speaker Series

Dr. Steve Mitchell will speak about his experiences with Doctors Without Borders for the Hebrew Congregation’s Shirley Lazarus Sunday Speaker Series at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Hurlbut Church sanctuary.

Mitchell, a 20-year Chautauquan, is a retired anesthesiologist from Akron, Ohio, who graduated from Albany Medical College and did his residency at New York University Hospital and a fellowship year at the Cleveland Clinic. He is currently using his medical expertise to help those in Nigeria and Sri Lanka, where he has traveled to work with others as part of the Doctors Without Borders program.

The Hebrew Congregation features Ira Cooperman and Bob Hopper, “The Spy Guys,” at the Shirley Lazarus Sunday Speaker Series event at 8 p.m. Sunday in the sanctuary of Hurlbut Church. The topic of their talk is “Spy Facts and Spy Fiction: Will They Confirm or Deny?”
