Chautauqua Dance Circle Views on Pointe Presentation Looks Deeper Into Season’s Ballets

It’s not typical to be able to stand up after a dance performance and ask questions. It’s pretty much frowned upon.

But in the Chautauqua Dance Circle’s final Views on Pointe lecture of the season at 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Hall of Christ, attendees will be able to do just that.

The CDC will be pulling video from the season’s “Evening of Pas de Deux” and after viewing each dance, Jean-Pierre Bonnefoux will field questions. Bonnefoux is the artistic director of the Charlotte Ballet and Chautauqua Dance.

The CDC also provides opportunities for discussion with the choreographers before certain performances throughout the season.

“One of the wonderful things about this format is that it allows for discussion after you’ve seen the piece,” CDC Treasurer Jim Dakin said. “At all of our normal pre-performance lectures, we talk about them before you’ve seen them and quite often, seeing a piece raises questions that stimulate good discussion.”

Dakin said the event also provides a way to experience dance in some form during Week Eight. This past week included the final performances of the Charlotte Ballet and the School of Dance. The next live performance will feature Garth Fagan Dance during Week Nine.

Not all the pieces from the performance will be shown due to time constraints, Dakin said.

“We will have a variety of different contrasting music, contrasting dancing styles, different choreographers and so forth, so it’s going to be quite an interesting variety of pieces that we can present this way,” Dakin said.

The CDC has done similar lectures like that in the past. Dakin said he’s looking forward to the discussion.

“I would love to hear the discussions around the variation in dancing styles,” Dakin said. “Traditional ballet, we have some of that and very modern stuff, we have that also, and I love discussions about how the art form has evolved over the years. I personally really enjoy learning about dance through this format.”

The Dance Circle will hold its annual meeting at 4:30 p.m. Monday at the Hall of Christ, immediately following the Views on Pointe presentation. All CDC members are invited. The election of a slate of officers and board members will be held during this meeting.
