Chautauqua Community Band Fourth of July Experience

The Chautauqua Community Band and conductor Jason Weintroub invite everyone to a Fourth of July CCB experience. Watch and listen to this brief concert on YouTube, which is accompanied by familiar scenes of Chautauqua. 

Coffee & Conversation with CHQ

At 8:30 a.m. EDT Saturday, July 4, on the Virtual Porch, join Vice President and Emily and Richard Smucker Chair of Education Matt Ewalt, Vice President of Performing and Visual Arts Deborah Sunya Moore, and Vice President for Religion Gene Robinson for a review of the week and a quick look ahead with CHQ Assembly.

Virtual Old First Night Run/Walk 

Sign up for the virtual “Around the World” Old First Night Run/Walk on Saturday, Aug. 1. Run or walk your own 2.75-mile race course and receive a race T-shirt. Proceeds benefit the Chautauqua Fund. To register for the race, please visit forms.chq.org/oldfirstnight.

Open Mic

The Friends of the Chautauqua Writers’ Center (formerly the Chautauqua Literary Arts Friends) encourage Chautauqua writers over the age of 18 to share their work at 5 p.m. EDT this Sunday, July 5, and every Sunday via Zoom. Literary Arts Contests 

Writers of all ages are invited to submit their poetry or prose by Aug. 2 to the writing contests sponsored by Friends of the Chautauqua Writers’ Center. Prizes are awarded in the adult, young adult, and youth categories. For more information and submission instructions, please go to chq.org/fcwc. Robert Pinsky Favorite Poem Project

At 5 p.m. EDT Wednesday, July 29, via Zoom, selected Chautauquans will be given the chance to read their favorite published poem and briefly explain why it is their favorite. This event, sponsored by the Friends of the Chautauqua Writers’ Center, is modeled on the initiative introduced to Chautauqua by the former U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. If you would like to read at this event, please apply at chq.org/fcwc by Friday, July 24. Applications must be submitted online. Questions should be directed to 4normarees@gmail.com

Smith Memorial Library 

The Smith Memorial Library is now loaning physical and digital materials, with an expanding selection of both. Patrons are invited to search, hold and download here, where updates on the library’s phased reopening can also be found.

Recitals with Rossen featuring Alexander Gavrylyuk

The first Recitals with Rossen will take place at 5 p.m. EDT Thursday, July 2, on the CHQ Assembly Video Platform. Rossen Milanov, music director of the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra, will be joined by Alexander Gavrylyuk, artistic advisor and artist-in-residence of the Chautauqua Piano Program. This program is made possible by The Bromeley Family Fund.

Weekly Conversation with Michael Hill and Candy Maxwell

Chautauqua Institution President Michael E. Hill and Board of Trustees Chair Candy Maxwell will hold the first of nine weekly community webinars at 1 p.m. EDT Thursday, July 2, on the Virtual Porch. Log in to CHQ Assembly to register for the webinar. Thursday’s session will focus on an overview of the summer and CHQ Assembly, and a discussion of Objective One of 150 Forward. Maxwell and Hill will respond to questions submitted during this Virtual Porch event.

Following the morning’s Chautauqua Lecture Series program, join others at 12:30 p.m. EDT Thursday, July 2, on the Virtual Porch to discuss this week’s lectures on “Climate Change: Prioritizing Our Global and Local Response.” All are welcome. The conversation will be facilitated by Tereza Jezkova, assistant professor in Miami University of Ohio’s Department of Biology.

Chautauqua Opera masterclass with Caitin Lynch

Chautauqua Opera Company holds its weekly morning master class with Guest Artist Caitlin Lynch at 10 a.m. EDT Wednesday, July 1, on the Virtual Porch. General and Artistic Director Steven Osgood hosts the event, which includes videos from Chautauqua Opera’s pre-recorded master class of the week featuring Lynch and four to five of the Chautauqua Opera Young Artists.
